We recommend that you strip the old paint using either a heat gun or a chemical stripper (test a small area first). Then, thoroughly wash the copper gutters with a diluted solution of white vinegar and water to remove any contaminants. Then, you can retreat the entire copper surface with a range of patination finishes available. Depending on the existing patina, copper can have nearly a dark brownish-black color, or a rich greenish-blue patina. Builders Websource
