Many thanks to everyone who answered! I should have been a bit more clear on the nature of the wood. It's not "rotted" per-say, but more like someone had attempted to uninstall/reinstall the door lock/handle hardware multiple times to the point where the wood is chewed up and all the screw holes are stripped, etc. In any event, it looks like I'll be going the epoxy/filler route to repair the door. Unless someone has other suggestions based on this new info.
