We recommend LN-901 Liquid Nails heavy-duty construction adhesive or PL-400. These products offer outstanding adhesion and flexibility and are easy to apply with a simple caulking gun. This is what we used on our pre-cast fireplace surround which is very heavy.

Sometimes latex-modified thinset mortar can be used, but the moisture can damage the drywall surface, potentially weakening the bond.

One you use construction adhesive, however, it's permanent. So make sure you take time to level each piece and brace it while it dries. You only get one chance to do it right!
