Re: mixing Portland CementFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsThe problem with dumping the cement into the pier holes and mixing it in place is two-fold: 1) It's difficult to get a consistent mixture that's properly hydrated and; 2) When mixing it in the hole, it's easy to get dirt mixed in with the concrete, which can compromise its strength. At least we would recommend getting a low-profile concrete mixing tray (about $10) and a hoe. This way you can mix a bag at a time where you have full control over the water mixture and can ensure proper consistency. At best, rent a powered mixer and let it do the work for you. If you do decide to mix the cement in the hole, get a concrete mixing paddle that can attach to a heavy-duty drill. This will help to mix it up. Just do it in small batches. Builders Websource
