It was suggested by a concrete pro, a rep with the Portland Cement
Association, who is a civil engineer, that I do the following. The project is a
single story home, turndown (monolithic) slab. There are three load bearing
walls in the interior spaces. 'Use a reinforced beam 8" x 18" to
support those wall loads, but do not let the slab come in contact with them.
After they're poured at the same height as the ABC, use building paper or PVC to
cover over them, to isolate the beams from the slab.' This allows any slab
expansion to slide across the beams, and they'll be less apt to crack by stress.
They'll be independent of the slab, yet fully support it and the walls. Also, to
separate them from the outside footings by a several inch gap, for the same
reasons. Your advice?
