Re: Staples vs. NailsFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsProperly selected and installed roofing nails provide improved blow-off resistance on asphalt shingles compared to staples. Some manufacturers will not warrant their products when installed with staples. The head size of the nail provides more surface area, which holds the shingle in place, particularly during high winds. Staples can pop through more easily, tearing through the shingle. The Canadian Asphalt Shingle Manufacturer's Association (CASMA) says: "Use proper roofing nails, which offer better fastener-holding strength than staples. Ensure that the nails are long enough to penetrate through plywood and are driven flush with the shingle surface. Follow the shingle manufacturer's instructions for the location of the nails on the shingle, as this can be critical to shingle's resistance to uplift and blow-off." We hope this puts your question to rest! Builders Websource
