We are demolishing an existing area (addition) next to our kitchen (due to foundation problems) and will be expanding our kitchen, doing another addition in this area. We want to remove an exterior wall (in the kitchen), which is a load-bearing wall and place a beam in there. We don't want any posts in the middle. The span is 17 feet and will carry the load of the trusses, as well as some of the weight from the roof we will be tying in from the addition. How can we go about determining the size of the beam that must be placed? I have been told that we can use a 2X8 I-beam. I called a building materials warehouse and they say that they have over 50 2X8s. How do I know what I need?
