I am building an addition (actually separated from my home -- don't ask)! I was wondering if someone could help with selection of a beam. The overall project is approximately 24' x 18'. I am using common trusses with a 4/12 pitch and 2x10 for floor joists. The joists will span 12' to the beam. I need to know what options I have for the beam as I want a clear 18' span in the basement. Please no glulams -- too pricey here! I need to know how to construct possibly a box beam or just a built-up beam. Thanks for the help in advance!
