I am doing a renovation and want to remove 6' of an old cinder-block Trombe
wall to add space and improve lighting. I want to keep this 6' open by
supporting roof with a short beam going from side wall (2x6 column in place) to
what remains of the Trombe wall. A single 2x6 header plate runs flat over the
entire Trombe wall and will remain after removal of the short section. The house
is standard cold-climate construction, 2x6 studs @16" o/c under double top
plate except for Trombe wall. Roof is standard 2x4 trusses @ 16" o/c so
there will be 4 in this 72" span. Ceiling is 1/2" gypsum board with
stiple; roofing is 7/16" oriented strand board with 25 year asphalt
shingles. Ceiling insulation is 12" of fibreglas R60. The house is in
western Canada and snowload can be substantial in winter. The roof faces south (natch,
for a Trombe wall!) and gets some wind in summer, very little in winter. My
question: what is the minimum size beam for this short span?
