Installing tile directly over hardwood strip flooring is not recommended. As the wood expands and contracts throughout the seasons, it will stress the tile and joints, causing cracks in the grout and/or the tile.

A proper tile job requires a solid, monolithic substrate. This leaves you with two choices:

1) Use 1/4" thick Hardibacker with thinset mortar and screws (special screws are required for backer board). This should give you a solid, clean surface for the tile.

2) Alternatively, if this raises your flooring too high, then you'll have to remove the existing hardwood floor and prepare the base either with a traditional mortar base or backer board. If the existing floor is level, then backer board should work fine so long as you follow the manufacturer's recommended installation guidelines.
