In periods of non-use (such as the winter when the air conditioner is off), the pipe and trap will dry out, allowing sewer gas to enter into your home. The best option is either to channel the water well away from the foundation into a dry well where it can dissipate into the soil, or into a sump where it can be pumped far away from the basement.
