Re: opening up wall between kitchen and living roomFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsJust so I understand, you want to open up a 3'x4' section of a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and the living room, correct? Since you'll have to cut partial sections out of a few load-bearing studs, you'll want to install a header to transfer the load to new jack and cripple studs -- much like framing out for a window. Depending on the load, you may be able to get by with a 4x6 header...but you'll be safer with a 4x8 or larger. (Without knowing the load, these are simply estimates based on typical residential construction). Issues to consider are: 1) Supporting/bracing the wall while you cut some of the studs to size; 2) Routing of electrical wires and plumbing that could be in the wall you're cutting up; 3) Impact on the finish materials on either side of the wall (particularly the kitchen area if it's near cabinetry). This isn't a difficult project, but like every project, don't be surprised if you run into issues along the way. How many home improvement projects ever go according to plan?!! Just plan out what you're doing and have patience to do it right. Builders Websource
