Re: Metal RoofingFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsIf you haven't already read it, we urge you to purchase and read our application note on metal roofing at: http://www.buildingadream.com/techbriefs/metalroofing.htm However, with any roofing material, the surface should be considered primarily decorative and it should be assumed that water and moisture can and will permeate the surface sooner or later. Therefore, a proper metal roofing installation includes a solid plywood decking over the rafters, coupled with roofing felt according to local building codes. The battens are laid on top of this, providing a secure nailing/screwing surface for the metal roof. Use of the proper fasteners and washers is also important. This approach will provide the best structural integrity and waterproofing. As to recommended manufacturers, this depends largely on the type of metal roof you intend to install and the geographical distribution of their products. Different manufacturers specialize in different styles and regions of the country. In general, look for a manufacturer that is a member of the Metal Roofing Alliance. Several references are available in our application note mentioned above. But, remember that the material itself is only part of the equation. Proper installation, workmanship and attention to detail around openings (including flashings) are essential ingredients to a successful, long-term installation. Good luck! Builders Websource
