A 70A service is very minimal by today's standards. Most newer homes have a 200A service, or certainly 100-125A at minimum.

However, it's possible that a 70A service is sufficient for your needs depending on the loads you expect. Keep in mind it only takes an oven and electric dryer to be on at the same time -- along with a few lights....and you'll be drawing 70A in no time.

Having a larger service doesn't waste energy by itself. Rather, it simply provides the extra capacity in the event you have simultaneous needs that exceed a given rating.

If you are remodeling your home and have the opportunity to rewire it, I would strongly urge that you consider upgrading your service. Contact your utility department for additional advice based on your energy requirements. It might be that you're just fine the way things are.
