Re: CMU additionFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsIs there a reason that you want your addition to be CMU's as opposed to wood framing? Generally, it is unusual to mix framing types. However, if you want to proceed, keep in mind that the exterior of the cement blocks will need vertical furring strips to provide an attachment surface for the vinyl siding. As a result, be sure to keep this in mind if you want the exterior surface to be flush between the old and the new addition. Assuming you put in a proper foundation designed to carry the required load, the best way to tie into the existing structure is to attach pressure-treated 3x8 with imbedded J bolts onto the ends of the cement walls. This will give you a good transition surface between the wood structure and the block structure. Without seeing your situation first hand, you must be sure to hire a structural engineer to design the details, including foundation and wall reinforcement. Lintel design must be done properly to ensure sufficient strength over windows, doors and large openings. Builders Websource
