When you refer to "hat metal," I assume you're referring to the "hat" shaped metal furring strips sometimes used in ceiling installations. There are also "resilient sound channels" designed to reduce noise transmission from second floor additions. USG describes the furring product as follows:

Metal Furring Channels: Hat-shaped channels for ceiling and wall furring. Roll-formed from two gauges of corrosion-resistant steel. DWC-25 is for screw attachment of 1/2" and 5/8" gypsum panels. DWC-20 is for greater spans and load-carrying capacity in ceiling applications. Products comply with ASTM C645. Face width: 1-1/4" Depth: 7/8" Length: 12'

Furring strips and sound channels always run perpendicular to the ceiling (or wall) joists on 16" or 24" centers, either of which can be used with 5/8" fire-rated sheetrock. Use 1-5/8" or longer sheetrock or pan-head screws to secure the flange to the joists and generously overlap all splices over a joist and secure with a few screws.

More installation information for a range of ceiling configurations (including steel ceiling joists) can be found at the USG website at:
