Are skylights reliable?

I'm about to buy a house with the primary living area on the North side. to introduce more light, I want to add skylights for natural lighting. My limited second hand experience tells me that I should stay away from skylights as they always leak, and will eventually cause expensive problems, potentially ruining a new vaulted ceiling which I also intend to introduce. So my question is, can skylights be trusted not to produce condensation, or leak?
