Re: Gas vs. Electric StoveFrom: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsWhether you put in a gas or electric cooktop depends on personal preference and accessibility to sufficient power or a nearby gas line. Generally, many "cooks" prefer gas cooktops for their instantaneous heat control. Electric cooktops retain their heat longer and are slower to respond to changes in temperature setting. If you decide to put in a so called "professional" cooktop, such as a Thermador or Viking, be sure you have an adequate gas supply (pressure) that won't be starved when other gas appliances are active, such as water heaters, furnaces, etc. The larger cooktops can take anywhere from 60,000 to 90,000 BTUs or more...and therefore require adequate exhaust ventilation. A good plumber should be able to determine whether your gas pressure will be sufficient based on the worst case BTU demands. If you're putting in an electric cooktop, you'll need an ample supply of power -- maybe even a 30-50 amp 220V circuit depending on the model.
