Re: Changing caulking from silicone to latexMistificaFrom: Mistifica@gmmail.com CommentsI am happy to read all this succes: you deserve it completely. Proud to work with you in Boston, next june. Please, take all the good thoughts streaming from my heart to you... From: info@builderswebsource.com CommentsWe contacted 3M for additional advice on using their caulk remover. The following is an excerpt from their technical manual: "3M Caulk Remover is a water-based gel that is designed to dissolve, swell, or loosen caulking materials found around tubs, showers, tile, and glass. It is effective on all types of caulk - silicone, acrylic, latex, rubber, etc. 3M Caulk Remover works by breaking the adhesion between the caulk and the surface. An 8-oz. bottle removes 24 feet of caulk." Also, note that this product could damage plastic, fiberglass, and refinished surfaces, so always test carefully before using. Typically, an 1/8"-thick coat is placed completely over the caulking. After 2+ hours, remove the loosened caulk with a putty knife or equivalent tool. Thoroughly clean with water then alcohol and let dry before applying new caulking. Discard the old caulking in newspaper. You might want to wear gloves since this can be a messy job.
